Fresh off of supporting Emma Blackery, pop punk star Bronnie, gives us an exclusive into what it was like supporting The Lunar Year last month and what she has in store for the rest of the year.
Bronnie has already had an exciting year, after just finishing two tours and releasing her single “Friendzone” earlier this year, she’s now working on even more new music.
In an exclusive interview with BuzzBeat, the singer-songwriter tells us all about who inspires her, an insight into her writing process and a possible album release.
What was it like supporting The Lunar Year on tour last month?
It’s great touring with The Lunar Year. I always get super excited when we do support tours because I can meet so many new fans. I think meeting The Lunar Year’s fans is awesome and meeting new musicians and new friends, we’ve all got on so well on this tour.
You have a lot of amazing supporters yourself, who do you personally look up to?
Women in rock! I love Alanis Morissette, Stevie Nicks and Joan Jett. They really inspire me because some days it’s hard being a girl in the industry so I just stick on my favourite artists. Even bands like Foo Fighters and Nirvana; I think their lyrics are so deep and I find with those bands that there’s a song for every emotion and that’s what I like to do with my music too. Fans message me and say “omg i've just had a break up” or “I’ve just graduated” and there’s so many different emotions so there’s Bronnie song for everything.
What advice would you give to the people who look up to you?
If something makes you unhappy just don't do it. It’s so simple, you literally live once which sounds so cliche doesn't it? I think surround yourself with people who love their job, have the same hobbies as you and want to do amazing things. Just surround yourself with inspirational people and you’ll be happier. Honestly the people I surround myself with, like my band, are such inspiring people and they’re so hard working which makes me want to work harder and we always have fun. That’s my life advice - just have fun.
So, I noticed you do interviews yourself on your radio show, The Bronnie Show, who has been your favourite person to interview and who would be your dream guest?
This is so hard, I've interviewed so many amazing people! One of my favorites is a recent one with Connor Ball and Sasa Macek from The Lunar Year. They’re so funny, they were just telling me so many funny tour stories! Dream guest? I feel like Yungblud would be a fun one, very energetic; I can get behind an interview with Yungblud. I love his music and everything he stands for, he’s super sick.

Your latest single “Friendzone” is amazing! Can you talk us through the writing process behind that?
So it’s basically singing a song to someone you like, you know when you were in high school and you didn’t want to tell someone you liked them, in case it ruined the friendship and you got put in the friendzone. It was basically just saying would you like to hang out but never getting to actually say it. I think everyone goes through it in life where you’re like “oh no, is this going to ruin our friendship?”. So I thought it would be a good song to write about.
You filmed part of the music video for “Friendzone” at one of your shows, how important is it for you to include your fans in everything you do?
So important!! In past shows we’ve always filmed everything so I’ve always done a big music video, we did one for “Total Outcasts” and another one for “So What”. It was just a big summer tour video and all the fans were like “we made it into the music video, that's so sick”. So I thought let’s do it for Friendzone in Manchester and do a celebratory end of tour video. It was super sick and obviously my cat was included in the music video too, shout out to minnie!!
On the subject of music videos, the music video for your single “Scream” is inspired by the horror franchise Scream. I just wanted to know a bit about the creative process for the video. How did the idea come about?
Well I love acting, I started out doing musical theatre and that's how I started singing, so I thought I'd get my acting skills out here. James Lynn, the videographer, smashed it. We were debating for ages what the video should be about and I had Scream merch done with ghostface on it and he suggested we recreate the opening scene from the first movie. I was like “how did we not come up with that before? The song is literally called scream!!”.
We co-directed the video, he shot it all and I edited it and we literally got it done within a day or two. It was a good collab!
Finally, what can people look forward to seeing from you next?
A lot more music and definitely more tours; we’re playing american this summer!! I really want to do an album, I have this conversation with so many other bands and they're like, “you just have to bite the bullet and do it or everyone will just be releasing EP’s for life”. I don't want to give too much away but definitely some tours and festivals on the horizon and new music!!
